A warm and comforting Southern dessert combining a moist cake with a gooey pecan topping.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 box butter or yellow cake mix
  • 1 cup chopped pecans (toasted if desired)
  • 3 large eggs (room temperature)
  • 1/2 cup vegetable oil
  • 1 cup whole milk
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter (for praline topping)
  • 1 cup brown sugar (packed)
  • 1/2 cup heavy cream
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract (for praline)
  • 1/4 tsp salt

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease a 9×13 baking dish.
  2. In a large bowl, mix the cake mix, eggs, vegetable oil, whole milk, and vanilla until smooth.
  3. Stir in the chopped pecans.
  4. Pour the batter into the prepared pan and smooth the top.
  5. Bake for 30 to 35 minutes or until a toothpick comes out clean.
  6. While the cake is baking, make the praline topping by melting butter in a saucepan and stirring in brown sugar and heavy cream.
  7. Bring to a simmer and cook for 3 to 4 minutes.
  8. Remove from heat and stir in remaining pecans, vanilla extract, and salt.
  9. When the cake is done, immediately pour the warm praline topping over the cake.
  10. Let the cake rest for 15 to 20 minutes before serving.

Notes

If the praline sauce thickens too much, warm it gently before pouring over slices when serving.
