Homemade Cheddar Biscuits

Delicious homemade cheddar biscuits that are golden on the outside, soft on the inside, bursting with cheesy flavor and a hint of garlic.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 and 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tablespoon aluminum-free baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, cubed and very cold
  • 1 cup + 2 tablespoons cold buttermilk, divided
  • 2 teaspoons honey
  • 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted (for topping)
  • 1/4 teaspoon garlic powder (for topping)
  • 1 teaspoon dried or fresh chopped parsley (for topping)

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 425°F (218°C).
  2. Combine the flour, baking powder, baking soda, garlic powder, and salt in a bowl or food processor. Mix until thoroughly combined.
  3. Cut in the cold butter using a pastry cutter or your fingers until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
  4. Stir in the shredded cheddar cheese until evenly distributed in the mixture.
  5. Make a well in the center of the dry mixture and pour in 1 cup of buttermilk and the honey. Gently combine until just incorporated; be careful not to overmix.
  6. Knead the dough gently on a floured counter for about 30 seconds. Shape into a rectangle, then fold into thirds. Repeat this folding process three times for added layers.
  7. Cut the dough into circles using a biscuit cutter or a glass and place on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.
  8. Brush the tops with the remaining 2 tablespoons of buttermilk.
  9. Bake for 18-22 minutes or until golden brown and a toothpick comes out clean.
  10. Mix the melted butter, garlic powder, and parsley in a small bowl while the biscuits bake.
  11. Brush the biscuits with the garlic butter mixture after baking. Serve warm.
