A classic homemade yellow birthday cake, soft and moist, with a rich vanilla flavor topped with luscious chocolate frosting—a perfect treat for any celebration.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 ½ cups granulated sugar
  • ½ cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 cup milk
  • 3 ½ teaspoons baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • 4 large eggs
  • 1 cup unsweetened cocoa powder (for frosting)
  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened (for frosting)
  • 4 cups powdered sugar
  • ½ cup heavy cream
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract (for frosting)

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease two 9-inch round cake pans.
  2. Cream together the softened butter and granulated sugar until light and fluffy.
  3. Add the eggs one at a time, mixing well after each addition. Stir in the vanilla extract.
  4. In another bowl, combine the all-purpose flour, baking powder, and salt. Gradually mix these dry ingredients into the wet mixture, alternating with the milk, until smooth.
  5. Pour the batter evenly into the prepared pans and smooth the tops.
  6. Bake for 25-30 minutes or until a toothpick inserted comes out clean.
  7. Allow the cakes to cool in pans for about 10 minutes before transferring to wire racks to cool completely.
  8. For the frosting, beat together the softened butter and cocoa powder until smooth. Gradually add the powdered sugar and heavy cream, mixing until light and fluffy.
  9. Once the cakes are cooled, spread frosting between layers and on the top and sides.
  10. Slice, serve, and enjoy!
