French Onion Chicken Orzo Casserole

A comforting casserole that combines the nostalgic flavors of French onion soup with hearty chicken and orzo, topped with gooey melted cheese.

  • 1 pound boneless, skinless chicken breasts
  • 1 cup orzo pasta
  • 2 large onions, sliced
  • 2 cups low-sodium chicken broth
  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • 1 ½ cups shredded Gruyère or Swiss cheese
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
  2. In a skillet over medium heat, add olive oil and sauté the sliced onions for 10-12 minutes until caramelized.
  3. Season chicken breasts with salt and garlic powder.
  4. In a large mixing bowl, combine sautéed onions, orzo, chicken broth, heavy cream, and half of the cheese.
  5. Place the chicken breasts in a greased 9×13 inch baking dish and pour the orzo mixture on top.
  6. Cover with aluminum foil and bake for 20 minutes.
  7. Remove foil, add remaining cheese, and bake for an additional 10-15 minutes until bubbly and golden brown.
  8. Let sit for 5 minutes before serving.

Notes

For variations, try adding sautéed mushrooms or spinach for extra nutrition. Adjust spices to taste, and feel free to swap cheeses.
