Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups granulated sugar
  • 3/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 cup whole milk
  • 1/2 cup vegetable oil
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 1 cup boiling water
  • 1 cup dark chocolate chips
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter (for frosting)
  • 2 cups powdered sugar (for frosting)
  • 1/2 cup unsweetened cocoa powder (for frosting)
  • 1/4 cup heavy cream (for frosting)
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract (for frosting)

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour two 9-inch round cake pans.
  2. In a large bowl, combine flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda, and salt. Whisk until well mixed.
  3. Add eggs, milk, oil, and vanilla extract. Beat for about 2 minutes until smooth.
  4. Carefully stir in boiling water. The batter will be thin.
  5. Pour the batter evenly into prepared pans.
  6. Bake for 30 to 35 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
  7. Allow cakes to cool in pans for 10 minutes before transferring to wire racks to cool completely.
  8. For the frosting, melt dark chocolate in a microwave or double boiler. Beat butter until creamy, then gradually mix in powdered sugar and cocoa powder.
  9. Stir in heavy cream and vanilla extract until smooth. Blend in melted chocolate until combined.
  10. Once cooled, frost the top and sides of both cake layers.
  11. Serve slices generously and enjoy!

Notes

For best results, use room temperature ingredients and avoid overmixing the batter. Store leftovers in an airtight container.
